In the creation of new human space, those moments when a design moves beyond the organization of components to become a coherent distinctive form, a dynamic interaction of elements and light, that is architecture. Amazing or peaceful enclosures, awesome or comforting structure, only when a design lives in unison with its environment, only then does it gain merit.
Nestled in the mountain forest outside Bozeman, Montana, this guest home offers both privacy and long-range views of the Gallatin Range. A circular stair of floating steps is set into the tower, a fuel container reclaimed from a local ranch.
With this residence at the Yellowstone Club in Big Sky, Montana, the desirability of creating a community with a unifying theme was taken to heart and the residence exploits the character of reclaimed materials and simple forms while allowing for the lifestyle choices that make each of us unique. The variation that nature inflicts on these materials was given respect and their application emphasized formal massings and visual importance.
A Chicago couple purchased a home high on the hill on the north side of Livingston, MT. The site offered a great location but the existing single-story home did not take advantage of the spectacular views – available only by standing on the roof.
